After two nights of sleeping in the kitchen with Fay I can say that her digestive processes are most active between the hours of 2 and 6 AM.
The Buttcare system works fine during the day. Even the night before last I was able to keep her butt clean enough for healing progress. The hours between 2 and 6 this morning were fine - I'd wake up whenever I heard farting of grunting or stirring of any kind and deal with the outflow. After 6 though I failed to wake up until 8 ish and found Herself ensconced in a pile. The damage was done and today we have another healing setback.
Fay's appetite isn't helping her any. She refuses to eat her prescription diet which is supposed to prevent diarrhea. She wants to eat, just not that. I tried mixing it with tuna but no go. Then I tried pan-fried chicken liver. That worked somewhat though she did leave several chunks of food behind. She's maybe had half a cup of food today. That is really abnormal for her.
She also needs to eat to protect her stomach from her other medications.
I don't like the looks of this.

Update On Fay's Butt
Fay and I saw the vet today and we're both feeling much better. Especially me.
The vet gave us antibiotics and the silvadene oinment and she made Fay donuts to sit on (pictured at right) We also hashed out a plan for Fay's recovery from this heinous infection involving the donuts, her wheelchair and occasional confinement so she can't go scraping-up her business.
Fay has also been on Prilosec and a special diet for her diarrhea which is no longer very bloody - PHEW! I'm seeing improvement there. Today I also put extra canned pumpkin in her food which I heard can help to firm things up. So far she hasn't pooped again since about 8 AM so we're seeing improvement on frequency as well.
I know this blog is supposed to be for complaining but my last post was so alarming that I worried one of my friends. I figured I'd better post an update on this situation so no one else is frightened on our behalf. My thanks to those of you who care,
XOXOXOXO
Mel
Another Gross Thing That Is Wrong With Fay
My dog also has bottom rot. The following sentence will be graphic so don't read it if you're squeamish. The area from the base of her tail, around her anus to the front of her vulva is purple-y red and swollen and it smells like sweaty feet.
The vet thinks it's because that area is difficult to keep dry due to Fay's incontinence. Fay's diarrhea is repeatedly contacting the rash making it germy and requiring frequent washing. More wet, more germs. Since she's paralyzed she sometimes ends up sitting in the poop until I discover her there.
This morning I had her in her wheelchair to improve air circulation and facilitate clean "evacuation." My paralyzed dog's back legs were actually kicking in her wheelchair when she pooped. I believe this was because it hurt so much. She's now trying to get comfortable on the cool tiles of the bathroom floor but she can't. I am grateful for once that her nerves don't work very well back there. They seem to work well enough for her to be uncomfortable though. Her ass must be on freaking fire.
I've put in for a prescription for silvadene cream, an anti-bacterial, anti-fungal. The sooner I get that the better. I'm highly tempted to just bring her over there and show the pharmacist her butt. I only hope this hasn't progressed to the point of MRSA.
